My journey with dreamwork as a life affirming practice began in November 2020. I was double dutching on the edge of burnout and disillusioned with the concept of “reality” being solely about surviving one crisis after another. One night in an organizing meeting where all of our check-ins touched on things we would love to spend time on if we didn’t have to move in urgency I blurted out “All My Niggas Got Dreams” and a worldbuilding project was born.
The working thesis of this project is: When Black people are consistently told survival is a privilege, dreaming feels inaccessible and frivolous. Dreaming subverts white failurist imagination and meets what exists beyond the confines of this material world. When we dream, we revoke consent from systems of misery that conspire to steal our lives before we’re gone. Black Dreaming is a sacred collective ancestral, wellness and liberation practice that allows us to return to care and vision.
My dreamwork has shown up in many iterations:
Dream Forget Return: A Live Dream Experiment - a multidisciplinary one person show blending music, poetry, storytelling and audience engagement.
Black Dream Experiment LIVE - a variety show
Dream With Me / Big Dream Energy online and in person coworking/dream parties
Dream Forget Return a chapbook of poetry and micro essays and a one person live dream experiment
Dream Sh** a short play
an assortment of workshops, lectures and more
